A Story from Soweto: Courage and Recovery
This week, Marco visited a grandmother in the heart of Soweto who shared a powerful story about her grandson.
At the age of eight, the boy was labelled with ADHD after showing signs of impatience and inattention at school. Although he loved music and enjoyed playing the drums, he was referred to a psychiatrist and placed on four different psychiatric drugs. Within a year, his grandmother watched helplessly as he deteriorated, losing energy, appetite, and the joy of living.
Refusing to accept this outcome, she took matters into her own hands. Against the advice and even threats of the psychiatrist, she carefully reduced and stopped the medication. The results were remarkable. Her grandson slowly recovered, and today at 14 he is thriving. He is excelling at school, healthy, and more passionate about music than ever before.
Her courage and determination not only saved her grandson but also inspired her to take action. She has now committed to becoming a CCHR activist in Soweto, determined to raise awareness and help others in her community.
