CCHR Africa recently participated in a transformative gathering at the Soweto Theatre centred on the theme: “Economic Empowerment as a Pathway to Ending Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).”

The event brought together over 400 women, including many emerging entrepreneurs, to focus on healing, awareness, and building sustainable business futures.
A central part of our contribution addressed a critical yet often ignored issue: the pathologisation of normal human reactions to life’s challenges.
We explored how society frequently pushes for the medicalisation of stress and struggle, especially within the high-pressure business sector.
The talk exposed the dangers of false psychiatric diagnoses and the resulting risks of potent drug therapies, advocating for human-rights-based approaches to mental wellness.
The response from the audience was overwhelming:
Our educational materials were fully distributed within minutes as participants sought deeper insights into protecting their mental health and rights.
Many attendees signed our petition to integrate human rights protections directly into current South African mental health laws.
Recognising the importance of this work, the event organisers have requested a partnership with CCHR to collaborate on future empowerment initiatives.
